Who needs First Aid Training in Ireland?

Under Irish law, every first aider - anyone who prepares, workplace first aiders, chills, stores, packs or serves food for the public - needs appropriate First Aid Training proportionate to their role under Chapter 2, Part 7 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007.

Roles that need this training:

  • Facility managers, hospitality supervisors, site supervisors, HSAs and workplace first aiders
  • Window cleaners and facade technicians
  • workplace first aiders, workplace first aiders and workplace porters preparing food for the public
  • Maintenance staff, electricians and plumbers
  • Warehouse staff using cold-storage units or shelf rotation
  • Anyone operating a first aid kit, water, foam or CO2 first aid kit, protective dressing or alarm panel

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007 places the duty on employers to provide suitable training for every worker exposed to first-aid risk in Dublin or anywhere in Ireland.

Is this First Aid Course legally recognised in Ireland?

Yes. Our First Aid Course is CPD Certified and RoSPA Approved, fully compliant with:

  • Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005
  • the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and General Application Regulations 2007, the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and General Application Regulations 2007 (First Aid)
  • the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and General Application Regulations 2007 governing first aid duties
  • EU Section 19 of the SHWWA 2005 Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and General Application Regulations 2007 standard and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)

The certificate is accepted by Health and Safety Authority (HSA) inspectors and employers across Ireland, the UK and the EU.

What does the First Aid Certificate cover?

Your First Aid Certificate confirms you have completed training in:

  • Fire outbreak prevention - eliminating or reducing the need to first aid
  • Hazard identification at height and risk assessment
  • Evacuation procedure planning - inspection, selection, set-up and use
  • Temperature monitoring system maintenance and digital first aid kit access
  • PPE and protective clothing, correct casualty observations and calibration tools and lanyards
  • Emergency and incident-response procedures

It demonstrates to your employer that you understand the hierarchy of control for first aid and the requirements of Irish HSA guidance.

Can I do this course if I only work occasionally at height?

Yes. The First Aid Course is suitable for anyone who handles food, whether occasionally or every day. Even using a first aid kit to change a light bulb, access a shelf or carry out a simple repair a few times a week requires awareness training under Irish safety legislation. The course scales from basic awareness up to full PPE for first aiders and incident-response content.

What if my job requires practical hands-on training?

Our Online First Aid Course covers the theory and awareness required for every first aider role in Ireland - enough for safe use of first aid kits and AEDs, anaphylaxis recognition with EpiPen administration, plus the day-one knowledge an HSA inspector expects.

If your role also requires first aid kit operation, casualty observation and ABC checks (walk-in chiller, rapid-response cabinet) or incident-response training, you will need additional hands-on practical certification (for example advanced fabrication or dry-diamond cutting) on top of this awareness course. Many Irish employers use our course as the foundation and then supplement with site-specific practical training.

Does the course cover Irish legislation specifically?

Yes. The course is built around Irish law, specifically:

  • Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (primary legislation)
  • the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and General Application Regulations 2007, the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and General Application Regulations 2007 (First Aid)
  • the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and General Application Regulations 2007 - specific duties on planning, supervision, equipment and rescue
  • EU Section 19 of the SHWWA 2005 Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and General Application Regulations 2007 standard and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)

It references Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and HSA guidance and enforcement practice throughout, so the material matches exactly what a Health and Safety Authority (HSA) inspector would expect to see.

Is the course suitable for beginners?

Yes. No prior knowledge is required. The First Aid Course uses clear language, real Irish workplace examples and visual aids to explain everything from scratch - from basic bleeding control and wound dressing through to PPE use, correct casualty observations and calibration tools, safe first aid kit technique and casualty observation and ABC checks. It is designed to be completed successfully by a complete beginner on their first attempt.

Over 100,000 learners have successfully used our First Aid Certificate to demonstrate compliance to their employers.

How long is the First Aid Certificate valid?

Your First Aid Certificate (First Aid Cert) is valid for 2 years from the date of successful completion. This validity period aligns with HSA (Health and Safety Authority) recommendations for workplace safety training.

Certificate details:

  • Validity period: 2 years from completion date
  • Expiry date: Clearly printed on your certificate
  • Download access: Re-download your certificate anytime during the 2-year period
  • Recognition: Accepted throughout Ireland, the UK, and across Europe

Why 2 years? Regular refresher training ensures workers maintain up-to-date knowledge of safe response practices, stay informed about any changes to safety regulations, and reinforce good habits that prevent workplace injuries.

Before your certificate expires: We recommend completing a First Aid Refresher course to renew your certification. Our Online First Aid Course serves as both initial training and refresher - same content, same price, instant new certificate.

Certificates issued by Irish First Aid include a unique certificate number that employers can verify. Learners across Dublin and Ireland can present their First Aid Certificate Online confidently to any employer.

What is a First Aid Refresher course?

A First Aid Refresher is a renewal course taken when your First Aid Certificate approaches expiry (every 2 years). It ensures your knowledge of safe response practices and workplace safety regulations remains current and compliant.

What the First Aid Refresher covers:

  • safe response practices - reinforce proper posture and movement
  • Risk assessment - identify and avoid hazards
  • Irish HSA regulations - stay updated on legal requirements
  • Injury prevention - understand common causes of workplace injuries
  • Best practices - learn any updates to safety standards

Why refresher training matters:

  • Maintains legal compliance for employers
  • Reinforces good habits that may have slipped over time
  • Updates knowledge on any regulation changes
  • Reduces workplace injury risk

At Irish First Aid, our First Aid Refresher is available fully online. Renew your First Aid Cert from anywhere in Dublin or across Ireland without attending a classroom - same convenient format, instant new certificate.

When do I need to take a First Aid Refresher?

You should complete a First Aid Refresher every 2 years to maintain a valid First Aid Certificate. This timeline is based on Irish HSA (Health and Safety Authority) recommendations for workplace safety training.

Key points about refresher timing:

  • every 2 years - the standard renewal cycle for First Aid certification
  • Before expiry - don't let your certificate lapse; plan ahead
  • Employer requirements - many employers track certificate expiry dates and require timely renewal
  • Change of job - some new employers may request fresh training regardless of certificate validity

Good news: Our Online First Aid Course serves as both initial training and First Aid Refresher. The content covers the same essential material - there is no separate "refresher" product to purchase.

Tip for employers: Set up calendar reminders to track when employee First Aid Certificates approach expiry. Our employer dashboard makes it easy to monitor certification status across your team.

Whether you are new to First Aid Training or renewing your certification in Dublin or anywhere in Ireland, the same convenient Online First Aid Course applies - complete it anytime, from anywhere.

Is First Aid Training legally required in Ireland?

Yes, it is a legal requirement. Irish law places a clear duty on employers to assess any first aid risks and provide proper First Aid Training to every employee who could fall from a height and be injured.

Key legislation includes:

  • Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 - employers must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety, health and welfare of every employee at work.
  • General Application Regulations 2007 (Chapter 2 of Part 7) - the duty to provide first-aid arrangements, appoint and train workplace first aiders, supply first-aid kits and post clear signage and information.
  • HSA Guidance on First Aid at Work - the Health and Safety Authority's practical guidance on training first aiders, sizing first-aid arrangements to workplace risk, and keeping records.

Employer obligations: Carry out a workplace first-aid risk assessment, appoint enough trained first aiders for the size and risk of the workplace, provide stocked first-aid kits and an AED if needed, post clear signage and emergency numbers, and keep certificates and incident records on file. Non-compliance can result in HSA inspections, improvement notices, prohibition notices, fines and prosecution.

Industries that legally need first aid training in Ireland: healthcare and care homes, construction, manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, retail and shopping centres, hospitality (hotels, pubs, restaurants, cafes), schools and creches, offices, transport and delivery, agriculture, and emergency-services support - effectively every workplace where an injury or sudden illness can occur.

Our online first aid course helps organisations across Dublin and the rest of Ireland meet these duties quickly and affordably. The first aid certificate issued at the end is documented proof of compliance for HSA inspections.
