What is First Aid Training?

First Aid Training is essential workplace education that teaches employees and employers how to respond calmly and correctly to the most common medical emergencies. In Ireland, having trained people on hand is part of every employer's duty under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007.

Every year, people collapse, choke, bleed badly or suffer a sudden medical emergency at work. In those first few minutes, a trained first aider makes the difference between a good and a bad outcome. Proper First Aid Training gives workers the knowledge and confidence to act - starting CPR, using an AED, controlling bleeding and managing a casualty until the ambulance arrives.

Our online First Aid Course is aligned with Health and Safety Authority (HSA) first-aid guidance - whether you work in healthcare, warehousing, construction, retail, hospitality or an office.

This training helps you support a safer workplace and meet your employer's first-aid arrangements. Our online First Aid Course uses video demonstrations, interactive elements, and clear written content to make every life-saving skill easy to understand.

Understanding First Aid Training Requirements in Ireland

The importance of proper First Aid Training cannot be overstated in today's workplace. Irish health and safety legislation places clear obligations on employers to make sure trained people and the right equipment are on hand when an emergency happens. Irish First Aid provides CPD certified First Aid Training that is aligned with HSA first-aid guidance.

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007, employers must assess the risks in their workplace and provide first-aid arrangements that match those risks. In practice that means enough trained first aiders to cover every floor and shift, an accessible and well-stocked first aid kit, and a clear plan everyone understands for raising the alarm and calling 112 or 999.

Who Needs First Aid Training?

First Aid Training benefits workers across virtually every industry in Ireland. A sudden medical emergency can happen anywhere, so having confident first aiders in the team matters in every workplace. The following groups especially benefit from our First Aid Course:

  • Healthcare and care workers - Nurses, care assistants and support staff who regularly encounter cardiac events, falls, choking and seizures
  • Warehouse and logistics staff - Teams who need someone ready to respond to crush injuries, cardiac events and severe bleeding
  • Construction and trades - Site teams facing falls, cuts, burns and crush injuries
  • Retail employees - Shop floor and stockroom staff dealing with cuts, burns, choking and customer collapses
  • Office workers - Designated first aiders ready for cardiac events, choking and sudden illness on every floor
  • Hospitality staff - Hotel, bar and restaurant teams who often have the public present
  • Agricultural workers - Farm and processing workers, often far from immediate medical help

What Does First Aid Training Cover?

Our comprehensive First Aid Course covers the life-saving topics every workplace first aider should know. The training gives you both the knowledge and the confidence to act in a real emergency:

Core Training Modules

  • Recognising an emergency - Assessing the scene for danger and deciding quickly when to act and call for help
  • The DRSABCD primary survey - Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR and Defibrillation
  • CPR and AED use - Correct chest compressions, rescue breaths and safe use of a defibrillator
  • Bleeding control and shock - Direct pressure, dressings, tourniquets and treating a casualty for shock
  • Choking and the recovery position - Back blows, abdominal thrusts and caring for an unconscious casualty
  • Burns, fractures and seizures - Calm, correct responses to common workplace injuries and sudden illness
  • Legal context - Your rights and your employer's duties under Irish health and safety law

Why Workplace First Aid Matters

Sudden medical emergencies remain a serious risk in every Irish workplace, and the first few minutes decide the outcome. When someone collapses, chokes or bleeds badly, a trained first aider is the difference between life and death:

For employees: cardiac arrest, severe bleeding, choking, anaphylaxis and stroke can all become fatal within minutes. Confident first aid - early CPR, fast AED use, firm pressure on a bleed, the recovery position - keeps a casualty alive until the ambulance arrives. The impact on a person and their family is impossible to overstate.

For employers: having trained first aiders on every shift protects your people, supports your legal first-aid arrangements, and gives everyone confidence that help is at hand. It also reduces the disruption and distress that follow an emergency handled poorly.

For the wider team: knowing that colleagues are trained and equipment is ready builds a genuine culture of care. Investing in proper First Aid Training is not just good practice - it tells your people they matter.

Online vs Classroom First Aid Training

Both online and classroom-based First Aid Training can provide effective education, but online training offers significant advantages for many learners and organisations:

Benefits of Online First Aid Training

  • Flexibility - Complete your training at any time, from any location with internet access
  • Cost-effective - No travel expenses, venue hire, or time away from work
  • Consistent quality - Every learner receives the same high-quality training content
  • Self-paced learning - Review key skills like CPR and AED use as many times as needed
  • Immediate certification - Download your certificate the moment you pass
  • Easy administration - Employers can track progress and manage team training efficiently

Our online First Aid Course uses video demonstrations, interactive elements, and clear written content to ensure thorough understanding. It is awareness-level Emergency First Aid at Work training; where a designated occupational first aider is required, a formal in-person certificate with hands-on assessment may also be needed.

First Aid Certificate Validity and Refresher Training

Your First Aid Certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of issue. Because skills like CPR fade without practice, it is good practice to refresh your training before it expires, and sooner if your role or workplace changes.

We offer First Aid Refresher courses for certificate renewal, allowing you to update your knowledge and keep your records current. Many employers build refresher training into their ongoing health and safety programmes.

When to Consider Refresher Training

  • As your 2-year certificate approaches expiry
  • After you have had to use your first-aid skills in a real emergency
  • When new equipment, such as an AED, is introduced
  • If you take on the role of designated first aider
  • When returning to work after an extended absence

The DRSABCD Primary Survey

Central to effective First Aid Training is the DRSABCD primary survey - the internationally recognised, step-by-step way to assess any casualty safely. It keeps you calm and makes sure you deal with the most life-threatening problems first.

Danger and Response

Before you approach, check the scene is safe for you, the casualty and any bystanders. Look for traffic, electricity, fire, machinery and chemicals - never become a second casualty. Then check whether the casualty responds to your voice and a gentle touch on the shoulders. If there is no response, act quickly.

Send for Help and Airway

Send someone to call 112 or 999 and fetch the nearest AED. If you are alone, put your phone on speaker. Open the airway with a gentle head-tilt and chin-lift, and check the mouth for anything obvious blocking it.

Breathing and CPR

Look, listen and feel for normal breathing for no more than ten seconds. Occasional gasps are not normal breathing. If the casualty is not breathing normally, begin CPR straight away - 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths if you are trained and willing - and keep going.

Defibrillation

Attach an AED the moment it arrives and follow the spoken prompts. Early defibrillation, combined with good CPR, gives a casualty in cardiac arrest the best possible chance of survival.

Step-by-Step: Responding to an Emergency

While our First Aid Course provides full video demonstrations, knowing the core response gives you confidence under pressure. Follow these fundamental steps to help a casualty safely:

  1. Check for danger - Make the scene safe for you, the casualty and bystanders before you approach.
  2. Check the response - Tap the casualty's shoulders and ask loudly if they are OK. No response means treat as an emergency.
  3. Send for help - Ask a specific person to call 112 or 999 and fetch the nearest AED.
  4. Open the airway - Use a gentle head-tilt and chin-lift, and clear anything obvious from the mouth.
  5. Check breathing - Look, listen and feel for normal breathing for up to ten seconds.
  6. Start CPR - If breathing is absent or abnormal, give 30 chest compressions at 100 to 120 per minute, 5 to 6 cm deep.
  7. Give rescue breaths - If trained and willing, add 2 rescue breaths after every 30 compressions; otherwise continue compressions only.
  8. Use the AED - Switch it on the moment it arrives, attach the pads and follow the voice prompts until help takes over.

Common Workplace Emergencies

Understanding the emergencies you are most likely to face reinforces why training matters. First Aid Training prepares you to respond confidently to each of these:

Cardiac Arrest: the Time-Critical Emergency

Cardiac arrest is the most time-critical emergency a first aider will face. Survival roughly doubles when a bystander starts CPR immediately and an AED shock is delivered in the first 3 to 5 minutes, and it falls by about 10% for every minute without defibrillation. Our course teaches high-quality CPR and confident AED use so you can act without hesitation.

Other Acute Emergencies

Severe bleeding, choking, anaphylaxis and stroke are among the leading causes of preventable death, and survival depends on a trained first aider acting fast. Our First Aid Training teaches the response that saves lives - bleeding control with direct pressure and tourniquets, choking response for adults, children and infants, the recovery position, anaphylaxis recognition with EpiPen administration, shock management, burns, fractures, the FAST check for stroke and a confident handover to paramedics.

Sudden Illness and Injury

Not every emergency is dramatic. Seizures, asthma attacks, heart attacks, head injuries and burns all call for calm, correct first aid. Knowing what to do - and what not to do - prevents a difficult situation from becoming a tragedy, and reassures the casualty until help arrives.

Industry-Specific First Aid Considerations

While the core principles of first aid apply everywhere, different industries face different emergencies. Our First Aid Course covers general principles that apply across all sectors, and workers can apply these fundamentals to their own workplace.

Healthcare and Care Settings

Older, frail and immunocompromised patients are at much higher risk of cardiac arrest, falls, choking and severe allergic reactions. Healthcare and care teams need confident casualty assessment, high-quality CPR, fast AED operation and anaphylaxis response, along with strict infection control during rescue breaths. Our training gives a strong foundation that care teams build on.

Warehousing and Logistics

Busy distribution environments bring a real risk of crush injuries, falls, severe bleeding and cardiac events brought on by exertion. Having a trained first aider on every shift, with an accessible AED and first aid kit, means help is always close at hand.

Construction and Building Trades

Construction sites are dynamic and ever-changing. First aiders on site deal with falls, cuts, eye injuries, burns and crush incidents, often in cold or wet conditions and far from immediate help. Our training covers the foundational skills that supervisors and team members can apply on any site.

Retail and Hospitality

Shops, hotels, bars and restaurants deal with cuts, burns, choking and customer collapses, often with the public watching. Calm, confident first aid protects customers and colleagues alike and keeps a stressful situation under control.

Employer Responsibilities for First Aid Training

Under Irish law, employers hold real responsibility for first-aid provision. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007 set clear duties:

  • Risk Assessment - Assess the workplace to decide what first-aid cover is needed, taking account of hazards, staff numbers, shift patterns and distance from emergency services
  • First-Aid Provision - Provide suitable first-aid equipment (first-aid kits, AEDs, dressings, gloves, antiseptic wipes), a first-aid room where needed, and clear procedures for raising the alarm
  • Trained First Aiders - Appoint and train enough first aiders to cover every workplace and shift, with training kept up to date
  • Information and Instruction - Tell workers who the first aiders are, where the equipment is kept, and what to do in an emergency
  • Record Keeping - Record incidents and the first aid given, and report serious injuries to the Health and Safety Authority as required
  • Review and Update - Review first-aid arrangements and training regularly and update them as circumstances change

Failure to meet these duties can result in HSA enforcement action, including improvement notices, prohibition notices, and prosecution. Strong first-aid arrangements protect your people and demonstrate genuine care for their safety. Investing in quality First Aid Training is both a legal duty and the right thing to do.

Benefits of First Aid Training for Businesses

Beyond meeting legal duties, comprehensive First Aid Training delivers real benefits across your organisation:

  • Lives protected - Trained first aiders can save a colleague's life in the minutes before the ambulance arrives
  • Stronger compliance - Documented, up-to-date training supports your first-aid arrangements under Irish law
  • Greater confidence - Staff who know help is at hand feel safer and more valued at work
  • Faster, calmer response - Trained teams act quickly and correctly when every second counts
  • Better staff retention - Employees value workplaces that invest in their safety and wellbeing
  • Enhanced reputation - A strong safety culture improves your employer brand and stakeholder confidence
  • Due diligence - Records of training demonstrate care in the event of an incident or inspection

First Aid Training for Remote and Hybrid Workers

The growth of remote and hybrid working has introduced new first-aid considerations. Home and lone workers may be far from a colleague if they suddenly fall ill. Our online First Aid Course is ideally suited to remote workers, providing accessible training that can be completed from any location.

Key considerations for remote workers include knowing how to call 112 or 999 and describe their exact location, keeping a basic first aid kit at home, knowing the signs of common emergencies such as heart attack and stroke, and agreeing a check-in routine for lone workers. Employers keep responsibility for home-worker safety and should ensure first-aid awareness is provided regardless of work location.
