First Aid in Educational Settings.

Schools are full of children, and children get hurt and unwell. An asthma attack in class, a severe nut allergy at lunch, a seizure, a bad fall in the yard, or a head injury during PE can happen on any school day. When it does, teachers and staff are the first responders until an ambulance arrives.

Our First Aid Course equips teachers, special needs assistants (SNAs), caretakers, and administrative staff with the knowledge and confidence to respond calmly to the emergencies that affect children and colleagues.

Schools have a duty of care to every child and member of staff. Trained first aiders on site mean a fast, confident response when a young person needs urgent help.
Who needs training

Education Roles That Require First Aid Training.

Various roles within educational settings benefit from First Aid Training.

Special Needs Assistants

SNAs supporting students who may have seizures, allergies or medical needs.

Teachers

Classroom teachers, often first to respond when a child is hurt or unwell.

Caretakers

Maintenance staff responsible for school facilities.

School Secretaries

Front-office staff who often manage the first call for help.

PE Teachers

Sports staff dealing with sprains, fractures and head injuries.

Lab Technicians

Science staff ready for burns, chemical splashes and cuts.

Why Schools Need First Aid Training

Educational institutions have a clear duty of care to their pupils and staff. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007 require school employers (boards of management, ETBs, or school patrons) to provide adequate first-aid cover, with enough trained first aiders on site.

Children are active, curious and sometimes medically vulnerable. Asthma, allergies, epilepsy and diabetes are common in the school population, and playgrounds and PE bring everyday risks of falls, cuts and head injuries. A trained adult who can respond at once makes all the difference.

When a child stops breathing, has a severe allergic reaction or suffers a serious fall, the first few minutes matter most. Trained staff on site mean help begins immediately, not when the ambulance arrives.

Emergencies involving children

First aid for children has its own priorities, and our course prepares school staff to respond to the situations they are most likely to face:

  • Asthma attacks and helping a child use their inhaler
  • Anaphylaxis and using an adrenaline auto-injector (EpiPen)
  • Seizures, keeping the child safe and monitoring recovery
  • Choking, back blows and abdominal thrusts
  • Head injuries and falls from PE, play and the yard

SNAs supporting children with complex needs may require extra, condition-specific training. Schools should make sure each student's individual care plan is understood by the staff around them.

School Principal and Board Responsibilities

  1. Risk Assessment - Assess the school to decide how much first-aid cover is needed
  2. Trained First Aiders - Provide First Aid Training to enough staff across every area and activity
  3. Equipment - Provide first-aid kits, an AED, and clear emergency procedures
  4. Information - Make sure staff know who the first aiders are and where equipment is kept
  5. Records - Record incidents and the first aid given, and keep training records up to date
FAQs

Education First Aid Questions.

Common questions from Irish schools, principals, and education staff.

Do teachers really need First Aid Training?
Yes. Teachers are often first on the scene when a child has an asthma attack, an allergic reaction, a seizure, a fall or a head injury. Knowing how to respond in those first minutes is essential, and every school should have enough trained first aiders on site.
Is online training accepted for school staff?
Yes. Our online First Aid Course is compliant with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and General Application Regulations 2007 and accepted by schools across Ireland. It is convenient for staff to complete during non-teaching time or over school holidays.
Do SNAs need additional training beyond this course?
SNAs who support students with complex medical needs may require additional condition-specific training, such as managing a particular seizure plan or allergy. Our course provides a strong first-aid foundation, but schools should assess each student's individual requirements.
Can the school pay for staff training?
Yes. Employers (schools) should pay for required safety training. We offer team pricing for schools training multiple staff members. Contact us for a quote.
