Understanding the HSA and First Aid Training.
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is Ireland's national workplace safety regulator. It enforces the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007, and publishes plain-language first-aid guidance for every Irish workplace. Many people search for "First Aid HSA" when they want training that matches those standards.
It is worth knowing that the HSA does not approve or certify individual training providers. Instead, it sets out what employers must put in place - trained people, a stocked first aid kit and a clear emergency plan - and inspects workplaces to make sure they comply.
What matters to employers is that your training reflects current HSA first-aid guidance and that you can act calmly and correctly in the first few minutes of an emergency. Our course is CPD certified, RoSPA approved, and trusted by employers throughout Ireland.
Understanding your options.
The two main types of workplace first aid training in Ireland, and what each one is for.
Emergency First Aid at Work (our online course).
Awareness-level training for everyday workplace safety. Our course is aligned with HSA first-aid guidance and gives you the life-saving basics - DRSABCD, CPR, AED use, choking, bleeding control, shock and the recovery position. It suits staff across warehousing, retail, manufacturing, construction, hospitality, offices and most healthcare support roles.

Occupational First Aid (formal in-person certificate).
A longer, formal first-aid certificate for designated occupational first aiders. The HSA expects this in-person qualification where the workplace is higher-risk or large enough to need named, fully trained first aiders on site. It involves hands-on practical assessment over several days.

What does the HSA require for first aid at work?
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is Ireland's national workplace safety regulator. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007, every employer must provide first-aid arrangements that match the risks in their workplace. In practice, the HSA expects three things: trained people who can respond, a stocked and accessible first aid kit, and a clear emergency plan that everyone understands.
The HSA does not approve or certify individual training courses. Instead, it sets out what good first-aid cover looks like and inspects workplaces to make sure it is in place. Our online Emergency First Aid at Work course is built around current HSA first-aid guidance, so it helps you and your employer meet those duties with confidence.
When awareness-level training is enough
For most employees, awareness-level Emergency First Aid at Work training is exactly what is needed - the knowledge and confidence to act in the first few minutes of an emergency until the ambulance arrives. This suits people working in:
- Offices and professional services - so every floor has someone ready to respond
- Retail and hospitality - shops, supermarkets, hotels, cafes and restaurants
- Warehousing and logistics - distribution centres, couriers and delivery teams
- Manufacturing - factories, production lines and assembly
- Construction support roles - site offices, supervisors and visiting staff
- Healthcare support - many care assistant and support roles
When a formal Occupational First Aid certificate is required
In higher-risk or larger workplaces, the HSA expects designated occupational first aiders who hold a formal, in-person Occupational First Aid certificate. This longer course includes hands-on practical assessment. You may need it if you are:
- A named, designated first aider for a higher-risk site
- Working where a risk assessment calls for fully trained on-site first aiders
- In a role where your employer specifically requires the formal certificate
For most workplace roles, awareness-level Emergency First Aid at Work training gives you the skills that matter most. If you are a designated occupational first aider, check whether your employer needs the formal in-person certificate.
What our course covers
Our Emergency First Aid at Work course covers the life-saving topics every workplace first aider should know:
- Recognising an emergency - assessing the scene for danger and deciding quickly when to act and call for help
- Legal context - employer and employee duties under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007
- The DRSABCD primary survey - Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR and Defibrillation
- CPR and AED use - chest compressions, rescue breaths and safe use of a defibrillator
- Bleeding control and shock - direct pressure, dressings, tourniquets and treating for shock
- Choking and the recovery position - back blows, abdominal thrusts and caring for an unconscious casualty
- Burns, fractures and seizures - calm, correct responses to common injuries and sudden illness
- Anaphylaxis and medical emergencies - using an EpiPen and spotting heart attack and stroke (FAST)
Employer recognition
Employers across Ireland trust our certificate because the training reflects current HSA first-aid guidance and is CPD certified. The certificate shows that the holder has:
- Completed structured Emergency First Aid at Work training
- Passed an assessment demonstrating understanding
- Received a CPD certified certificate from an accredited provider

Each certificate includes a unique verification code that employers can check online to confirm it is authentic and in date.
Emergency First Aid at Work vs Occupational First Aid
It helps to be clear about the two main types of workplace first aid training in Ireland, because they serve different needs.
Emergency First Aid at Work (our course)
- Awareness-level training aligned with HSA first-aid guidance
- Covers DRSABCD, CPR, AED use, choking, bleeding control, shock and the recovery position
- Completed online in approximately 90 minutes
- Instant certificate on passing, valid for 2 years
- CPD certified and RoSPA approved
- Affordable at €33
- Trusted by the vast majority of Irish employers
Occupational First Aid (formal certificate)
- A longer, formal in-person first-aid certificate
- Includes hands-on practical assessment over several days
- For designated occupational first aiders
- Expected in higher-risk or larger workplaces
- Requires travel to a training centre
- Higher cost - typically €150-300
For most workers and employers, awareness-level Emergency First Aid at Work training is excellent value and covers the skills that save lives. The extra time and cost of a formal Occupational First Aid certificate is worth it when your role specifically calls for it.
Making the right choice for your situation
If you are unsure whether you need an awareness-level First Aid course or a formal Occupational First Aid certificate, we recommend:
- Check with your employer - ask whether they need a designated Occupational First Aid certificate or awareness-level Emergency First Aid at Work training
- Review the job description - roles that require a formal certificate usually state it clearly
- Consider the risk level - higher-risk sites are more likely to need designated, formally certified first aiders
- Weigh time and cost - for general workplace readiness, our online course is the fast, affordable choice
For the vast majority of people, our online Emergency First Aid at Work course is the right starting point. If your employer specifically requires a formal Occupational First Aid certificate, we are happy to point you in the right direction.
